A brown lace front at bob-to-shoulder length is the most quietly useful wig you can own. Long enough to have shape, short enough to be light and low maintenance, and in a colour that suits nearly everyone and works everywhere.
13x4 transparent lace
Thirteen inches across, four back — ear-to-ear coverage with genuine parting space. Part it in the middle, sweep it to one side, or move it between wears without a cap edge appearing at the temples.
Transparent lace is a considerable step up from the old-fashioned beige lace that used to come as standard: it's tinted to disappear against a range of skin tones rather than sitting there as a pale band. Once laid and trimmed properly it gives a clean, believable hairline.
The full frontal matters more at this length than at longer ones. On a 26-inch wig, hair falls forward and covers the top of the head. On a 12 or 14 inch cut it doesn't — the parting and hairline are visible in most of the ways you'll wear it, so having lace all the way across is what makes it work.
Brown
The most wearable colour there is. Warmer against the skin than black, which can be stark on pale and mid tones and pull colour out of the face. It also photographs far better — black tends to lose all its detail and read as a flat silhouette, while brown shows depth and shadow as it moves.
It's a colour that works at the office and at dinner without adjustment, which is exactly what you want from a wig you reach for often.
Three lengths
Twelve inches sits at the jaw for a bob. Fourteen falls just below, to the collarbone. Sixteen reaches the shoulder. All three are in the range that's easiest to live with: lighter on the cap, far less tangling at the nape where wigs actually wear out, quicker to wash and dry, and longer-lasting as a result.
Worth knowing: wigs arrive compressed from packaging and look thinner and shorter than expected out of the box. Shake it out and let it hang before judging it.
Why it's worth buying
- A bob without the haircut. If you've been circling a shorter cut, this answers the question — and you can change your mind that evening.
- Parting freedom where it counts. A full 13x4 on a short wig is unusual, and it's what stops it reading as a wig.
- The easiest length to wear. Light, quick to wash, minimal tangling, and no need to tie it back at night.
- Human hair. Straighten it into a sharp blunt bob or add a wave for something softer, then wash it back.
- Brown flatters more people than anything else. No upkeep, no toning, nothing that fades.
- It protects your own hair. No heat, no colour, no daily manipulation underneath.
Care
Wash with a sulphate-free shampoo, condition through the mid-lengths and ends rather than the roots, and air dry on a stand. Detangle from the ends upward with a wide-tooth comb. Use a heat protectant and keep temperatures moderate. Handle the lace gently at the hairline when installing and removing. Store it on a stand so the shape holds between wears.

Length and shrinkage guide
All our lengths are measured stretched. Textured hair sits shorter than its stated measurement once it is dry:
- Straight — almost no shrinkage. What you order is what you see.
- Body wave — an inch or two shorter.
- Deep wave and water wave — roughly a fifth to a quarter shorter.
- Curly and kinky curly — up to half. A 20 inch curly piece can sit at 10 inches once dry.
If you are between two lengths, take the longer one. Length disappointment is the commonest reason wigs get sent back, and sizing up costs nothing.

Choosing your cap
The cap decides how convincing the wig looks and how much skill it takes to put on. Neither end of this list is better — they suit different people.
- 4x4 closure — the simplest to install and the hardest to get wrong. One parting position. The sensible first wig.
- 4x6, 4x7 and 5x5 closure — a wider lace area, so you can move your parting without exposing the cap.
- 13x4 frontal — ear to ear coverage with real parting space. Middle part, deep side sweep, or moved between wears.
- 13x5 and 13x6 frontal — five or six inches of depth, so a deep middle part stays convincing all the way back.
- 360 frontal — lace around the whole perimeter. The only option if you want high ponytails and updos.
- V-part and half wigs — no lace at all. Your own hair is left out to blend, so the parting is genuinely your scalp.
Frontals give the most freedom and take the most practice. Closures are quicker, more forgiving, and often wearable glueless with straps and combs.
Care
A human hair wig has no scalp feeding it oil, so the ends dry out faster than your own hair would. Looking after it is the difference between a wig that lasts a season and one that lasts years.
- Detangle from the ends upward, never from the roots down. On textured hair, do it wet with conditioner in — dry brushing pulls the wave or curl pattern out permanently.
- Wash sparingly with a sulphate-free shampoo, in sections rather than piling it up.
- Condition through the mid-lengths and ends rather than the roots, and use a weekly mask.
- Air dry on a stand. Allow plenty of time at higher densities — a dense wig put away damp is how wigs develop a smell.
- Heat protectant every time, at moderate temperatures. Repeated high heat wears a wig out faster than anything else.
- Refresh between wears with water and a little conditioner in a spray bottle rather than rewashing.
- Handle lace gently at the hairline, and store on a stand so the shape holds.
On coloured hair: reds and blondes fade fastest. Wash in cool water, and use a purple toning shampoo every few washes on blonde and highlighted pieces.
