Skin tone. It suits light to medium skin tones. On deeper skin tones the pigment in the skin absorbs the light rather than the hair, which risks burns, blistering and changes in skin colour. Check the manufacturer's skin tone chart before your first use, and don't use it if your tone falls outside the recommended range.

Always patch test. Treat a small area, wait 24 hours, and check for a reaction before doing a full session.

Using it safely

• Shave the area first and make sure skin is clean and dry. Don't wax, pluck or epilate beforehand — the hair root needs to be there.
• Never look directly at the light, and don't use it near the eyes, on the face above the cheekbones, or on the eyebrows.
• Avoid broken, irritated or sunburnt skin, tattoos, moles, and dark freckles.
• Don't use it on recently tanned skin, and keep treated areas out of the sun and covered with SPF.
• Don't exceed the recommended frequency. More often is not faster.

Speak to your GP first if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have epilepsy or photosensitivity, take medication that increases light sensitivity, or have a skin condition affecting the area you want to treat.
