Brushing is the part of a hair routine nobody thinks about, and it's where most of the damage happens. Hair is at its most fragile when wet, tangles concentrate stress at a single point, and pulling through a knot from the roots down snaps strands rather than separating them.
A good detangling brush fixes that with flexible bristles that give way rather than forcing through. This one adds a shaped handle that actually sits in your hand, which matters more than it sounds — a brush you can grip properly is one you use with less force.
The technique that matters
Start at the ends, not the roots. Work in short sections, moving up an inch or two at a time as each part comes free.
Brushing from the roots down drags every tangle in the length into a single knot at the bottom and then forces through it. Starting at the ends releases each tangle individually with almost no tension. It takes thirty seconds longer and saves a great deal of hair — and it's the single most useful habit for anyone with long, curly or fine hair.
Use it on your wigs and extensions
This matters more for wigs than for your own hair. A wig has no scalp replenishing it with oil, so it's drier by nature and less forgiving of tension. And unlike your own hair, anything that comes out doesn't grow back.
Always detangle a wig damp with conditioner in, never dry, and always from the ends upward. On textured wigs — body wave, deep wave, curly — dry brushing pulls the pattern out permanently. Work on a stand where you can, so you're not fighting the cap.

Care
Clear hair from the bristles regularly, and wash it occasionally with warm soapy water — product build-up on a brush transfers straight back onto clean hair, which is why hair sometimes looks dull the day after a wash for no obvious reason. Let it dry fully before use.

Length and shrinkage guide
All our lengths are measured stretched. Textured hair sits shorter than its stated measurement once it is dry:
- Straight — almost no shrinkage. What you order is what you see.
- Body wave — an inch or two shorter.
- Deep wave and water wave — roughly a fifth to a quarter shorter.
- Curly and kinky curly — up to half. A 20 inch curly piece can sit at 10 inches once dry.
If you are between two lengths, take the longer one. Length disappointment is the commonest reason wigs get sent back, and sizing up costs nothing.
Wigs also arrive compressed from packaging and look thinner and shorter than expected. Shake it out and let it hang before judging it.
Choosing your cap
The cap decides how convincing the wig looks and how much skill it takes to put on. Neither end of this list is better — they suit different people.
- 4x4 closure — the simplest to install and the hardest to get wrong. One parting position. The sensible first wig.
- 4x6, 4x7 and 5x5 closure — a wider lace area, so you can move your parting without exposing the cap.
- 13x4 frontal — ear to ear coverage with real parting space. Middle part, deep side sweep, or moved between wears.
- 13x5 and 13x6 frontal — five or six inches of depth, so a deep middle part stays convincing all the way back.
- 360 frontal — lace around the whole perimeter. The only option if you want high ponytails and updos.
- V-part and half wigs — no lace at all. Your own hair is left out to blend, so the parting is genuinely your scalp.
Frontals give the most freedom and take the most practice. Closures are quicker, more forgiving, and often wearable glueless with straps and combs.
Care
A human hair wig has no scalp feeding it oil, so the ends dry out faster than your own hair would. Looking after it is the difference between a wig that lasts a season and one that lasts years.
- Detangle from the ends upward, never from the roots down. On textured hair, do it wet with conditioner in — dry brushing pulls the wave or curl pattern out permanently.
- Wash sparingly with a sulphate-free shampoo, in sections rather than piling it up.
- Condition through the mid-lengths and ends rather than the roots, and use a weekly mask.
- Air dry on a stand. Allow plenty of time at higher densities — a dense wig put away damp is how wigs develop a smell.
- Heat protectant every time, at moderate temperatures. Repeated high heat wears a wig out faster than anything else.
- Refresh between wears with water and a little conditioner in a spray bottle rather than rewashing.
- Handle lace gently at the hairline, and store on a stand so the shape holds.
On coloured hair: reds and blondes fade fastest. Wash in cool water, and use a purple toning shampoo every few washes on blonde and highlighted pieces.
