Short hair is the one length people talk themselves out of and then love. A bob or a shoulder-length cut is lighter to wear, quicker to style, less prone to tangling, and it frames the face in a way that long hair simply doesn't. The catch is that cutting your own hair to find out is a decision you live with for a year.
This is that experiment made reversible. A 4x6 lace closure wig in natural black body wave, running from 10 to 18 inches — chin-length through to just past the shoulder.
Why 4x6 free part
Six inches of lace across the top gives you genuine parting freedom: middle, off to either side, or somewhere different tomorrow, all landing on lace so the parting reads as scalp. A standard 4x4 closure effectively commits you to one spot, and moving it exposes the cap.
Against a full 13x4 frontal you give up coverage at the temples — a closure sits on top of the head rather than reaching ear to ear — so it's at its best worn down or half-up. In exchange it's considerably faster to install and far more forgiving to get right, which matters more at these lengths where the wig sits close to your face.
Why short works better than people expect
- It's lighter. Less hair means less weight on the cap, which means less pulling and more comfort across a full day.
- It tangles far less. Most wig wear-and-tear happens at the nape where long hair rubs against collars and seatbelts. Short lengths barely reach it.
- It's quicker to wash and dry. A 12" wig dries in a fraction of the time a 24" one takes.
- It lasts longer. Fewer tangles, less friction, less manipulation.
- It reads as your own hair more easily. Very long wigs invite a second look; a well-fitted bob rarely does.
Find your length
Ten inches sits around the chin for a proper short bob. 12" to 14" falls to the jaw and just below — the classic bob-to-lob range. 16" reaches the collarbone, and 18" sits just past the shoulder.
Body wave adds movement at every one of those lengths, which stops a short cut from looking flat or severe. It also means a little shrinkage against the stated measurement, so if you're between two lengths, take the longer one.
Worth knowing: wigs arrive compressed from packaging and look thinner and shorter than expected out of the box. Shake it out and let it hang before judging it.
Why it's worth buying

- Natural black takes colour going darker. Browns and espresso shades work; going lighter would need bleaching.

Care
Wash with a sulphate-free shampoo, condition through the mid-lengths and ends rather than the roots, and air dry on a stand. Detangle from the ends upward with a wide-tooth comb, and never brush the wave out dry. Use a heat protectant and keep temperatures moderate. Handle the lace gently at the parting — it's fine and tears more easily than the cap. Store it on a stand so the shape holds.

Length and shrinkage guide
All our lengths are measured stretched. Textured hair sits shorter than its stated measurement once it is dry:
- Straight — almost no shrinkage. What you order is what you see.
- Body wave — an inch or two shorter.
- Deep wave and water wave — roughly a fifth to a quarter shorter.
- Curly and kinky curly — up to half. A 20 inch curly piece can sit at 10 inches once dry.
If you are between two lengths, take the longer one. Length disappointment is the commonest reason wigs get sent back, and sizing up costs nothing.
Wigs also arrive compressed from packaging and look thinner and shorter than expected. Shake it out and let it hang before judging it.
Choosing your cap
The cap decides how convincing the wig looks and how much skill it takes to put on. Neither end of this list is better — they suit different people.
- 4x4 closure — the simplest to install and the hardest to get wrong. One parting position. The sensible first wig.
- 4x6, 4x7 and 5x5 closure — a wider lace area, so you can move your parting without exposing the cap.
- 13x4 frontal — ear to ear coverage with real parting space. Middle part, deep side sweep, or moved between wears.
- 13x5 and 13x6 frontal — five or six inches of depth, so a deep middle part stays convincing all the way back.
- 360 frontal — lace around the whole perimeter. The only option if you want high ponytails and updos.
- V-part and half wigs — no lace at all. Your own hair is left out to blend, so the parting is genuinely your scalp.
Frontals give the most freedom and take the most practice. Closures are quicker, more forgiving, and often wearable glueless with straps and combs.
Care
A human hair wig has no scalp feeding it oil, so the ends dry out faster than your own hair would. Looking after it is the difference between a wig that lasts a season and one that lasts years.
- Detangle from the ends upward, never from the roots down. On textured hair, do it wet with conditioner in — dry brushing pulls the wave or curl pattern out permanently.
- Wash sparingly with a sulphate-free shampoo, in sections rather than piling it up.
- Condition through the mid-lengths and ends rather than the roots, and use a weekly mask.
- Air dry on a stand. Allow plenty of time at higher densities — a dense wig put away damp is how wigs develop a smell.
- Heat protectant every time, at moderate temperatures. Repeated high heat wears a wig out faster than anything else.
- Refresh between wears with water and a little conditioner in a spray bottle rather than rewashing.
- Handle lace gently at the hairline, and store on a stand so the shape holds.
On coloured hair: reds and blondes fade fastest. Wash in cool water, and use a purple toning shampoo every few washes on blonde and highlighted pieces.
