Fine hair isn't thin hair. There can be plenty of it — each strand is simply finer, lighter, and less able to hold itself up. Which is why fine hair goes flat by lunchtime no matter what mousse you used, and why backcombing it only breaks it.
Volume in fine hair has to be built at the root, and it has to be built with structure rather than product. That's what crimped ceramic plates do: they press a fine zigzag into the hair close to the scalp, and that texture physically props the top layer up from underneath.
The technique, which is the whole point
The crimped sections never show. They go underneath.
- Start with completely dry, clean hair.
- Section off the top layer and clip it out of the way. That layer stays smooth and hides everything else.
- Underneath, take small sections and clamp the plates at the roots for a few seconds, an inch or so from the scalp. Work across the crown and the sides.
- Drop the top layer back down. It falls over the crimped hair and covers it entirely.
- Style as normal. The lift holds until you wash it out.
Nobody can tell you've used it. They just notice your hair looks thicker.
Why ceramic matters more on fine hair
Ceramic heats evenly and holds temperature steadily across the whole plate. Cheaper metal plates develop hot spots, so some sections scorch while others barely take — and you end up going over the same hair repeatedly. Repeated passes cause far more damage than one correctly heated one, and fine hair has the least tolerance for it.
Fine hair also needs less heat than thick hair to take a shape. Start at the lowest setting that works and go up only if you have to.
It also crimps properly
Used along the full length rather than just the roots, the same plates give you a full crimped texture — the deliberate, slightly retro look that's very much back. Two tools in one, depending on where you put the plates.
Why it's worth buying
- It solves what other tools can't. Straighteners smooth, curlers shape, dryers dry. None of them create lift at the root.
- It works when product doesn't. Mousses and powders coat fine hair and weigh it down. This adds structure instead.
- The effect is invisible. All of the volume, none of the visible texture.
- It's quick. Five minutes on the under-layers, and it lasts until your next wash.
- It works on wigs too. Root lift at the crown is one of the simplest ways to stop a wig looking flat and cap-like.

Getting the best from it
Heat protectant every time, even on the hidden sections — the roots are the newest, healthiest hair you have. Keep to the lowest temperature that gives you the result you want, don't hold the plates in one place longer than a few seconds, and let it cool fully before it goes back in the drawer.

Length and shrinkage guide
All our lengths are measured stretched. Textured hair sits shorter than its stated measurement once it is dry:
- Straight — almost no shrinkage. What you order is what you see.
- Body wave — an inch or two shorter.
- Deep wave and water wave — roughly a fifth to a quarter shorter.
- Curly and kinky curly — up to half. A 20 inch curly piece can sit at 10 inches once dry.
If you are between two lengths, take the longer one. Length disappointment is the commonest reason wigs get sent back, and sizing up costs nothing.
Wigs also arrive compressed from packaging and look thinner and shorter than expected. Shake it out and let it hang before judging it.
Choosing your cap
The cap decides how convincing the wig looks and how much skill it takes to put on. Neither end of this list is better — they suit different people.
- 4x4 closure — the simplest to install and the hardest to get wrong. One parting position. The sensible first wig.
- 4x6, 4x7 and 5x5 closure — a wider lace area, so you can move your parting without exposing the cap.
- 13x4 frontal — ear to ear coverage with real parting space. Middle part, deep side sweep, or moved between wears.
- 13x5 and 13x6 frontal — five or six inches of depth, so a deep middle part stays convincing all the way back.
- 360 frontal — lace around the whole perimeter. The only option if you want high ponytails and updos.
- V-part and half wigs — no lace at all. Your own hair is left out to blend, so the parting is genuinely your scalp.
Frontals give the most freedom and take the most practice. Closures are quicker, more forgiving, and often wearable glueless with straps and combs.
Care
A human hair wig has no scalp feeding it oil, so the ends dry out faster than your own hair would. Looking after it is the difference between a wig that lasts a season and one that lasts years.
- Detangle from the ends upward, never from the roots down. On textured hair, do it wet with conditioner in — dry brushing pulls the wave or curl pattern out permanently.
- Wash sparingly with a sulphate-free shampoo, in sections rather than piling it up.
- Condition through the mid-lengths and ends rather than the roots, and use a weekly mask.
- Air dry on a stand. Allow plenty of time at higher densities — a dense wig put away damp is how wigs develop a smell.
- Heat protectant every time, at moderate temperatures. Repeated high heat wears a wig out faster than anything else.
- Refresh between wears with water and a little conditioner in a spray bottle rather than rewashing.
- Handle lace gently at the hairline, and store on a stand so the shape holds.
On coloured hair: reds and blondes fade fastest. Wash in cool water, and use a purple toning shampoo every few washes on blonde and highlighted pieces.
