A half wig is the easiest way to wear one. There's no lace to cut, no adhesive, no hairline to match — because you're using your own. It sits behind a section of your natural hair that you leave out at the front, and that section blends over the top.
Which means the part everyone worries about is solved before you start. Your hairline is your hairline. Nobody is looking for lace, because there isn't any.
Why a half wig rather than a full one
- It goes on in minutes. Clip it in, brush your own hair over the join, done. No glue, no remover, no laying edges.
- Nothing to get wrong. The most common wig mistakes — badly cut lace, a visible cap edge, a hairline that doesn't sit flat — simply don't apply.
- It's cooler and lighter. Your scalp isn't fully covered, which matters over a long day.
- Your own hair does the blending. Colour matching is far more forgiving when your real hair frames the face.
- It's a good first step. If full wigs have intimidated you, this is where to start.
The trade-off is that you need enough of your own hair at the front to leave out, and it needs to be a reasonable match for texture. If you want to cover everything, a full lace wig is the better choice.
Two curl patterns
- Kinky curly — a tighter, springier coil that blends with natural 4-type hair rather than approximating it. The right choice if your own hair is coily and you want the join invisible.
- Burmese curly — a looser, more open curl with more visible movement and length. Better suited to wavy or loosely curly natural hair.
Pick the one closest to your own texture. That's what makes the blend work.
250% or 300% density
Both are well above the market standard of 150% to 180%, and on curls that matters — curls occupy space but also leave gaps, and low density goes see-through at the ends. At 250% the hair stays full to the tips. At 300% it's genuinely big, spectacular in photographs, and noticeably heavier to wear all day.
Length, and shrinkage
Sixteen to thirty-four inches, measured stretched. Curly hair loses a great deal of visible length to shrinkage — commonly a quarter to a third, and more on the kinky curly. A 24" piece can sit closer to 16" once it's dry and in its natural state.
Buy longer than the length you want to see. This is the single commonest reason curly hair gets returned.
Care
- Never brush it dry. Detangle wet, with conditioner in, using fingers or a wide-tooth comb from the ends upward. Dry brushing destroys the curl pattern permanently.
- Wash in sections with a sulphate-free shampoo, squeezing rather than scrubbing.
- Condition generously. A leave-in and a light oil on the ends does more than any curl-specific product.
- Air dry or diffuse on low, scrunching rather than rubbing. At 300% allow plenty of drying time.
- Refresh, don't rewash. Water and a little conditioner in a spray bottle brings the curls back between wears.

Length and shrinkage guide
All our lengths are measured stretched. Textured hair sits shorter than its stated measurement once it is dry:
- Straight — almost no shrinkage. What you order is what you see.
- Body wave — an inch or two shorter.
- Deep wave and water wave — roughly a fifth to a quarter shorter.
- Curly and kinky curly — up to half. A 20 inch curly piece can sit at 10 inches once dry.
If you are between two lengths, take the longer one. Length disappointment is the commonest reason wigs get sent back, and sizing up costs nothing.
Wigs also arrive compressed from packaging and look thinner and shorter than expected. Shake it out and let it hang before judging it.
Choosing your cap
The cap decides how convincing the wig looks and how much skill it takes to put on. Neither end of this list is better — they suit different people.
- 4x4 closure — the simplest to install and the hardest to get wrong. One parting position. The sensible first wig.
- 4x6, 4x7 and 5x5 closure — a wider lace area, so you can move your parting without exposing the cap.
- 13x4 frontal — ear to ear coverage with real parting space. Middle part, deep side sweep, or moved between wears.
- 13x5 and 13x6 frontal — five or six inches of depth, so a deep middle part stays convincing all the way back.
- 360 frontal — lace around the whole perimeter. The only option if you want high ponytails and updos.
- V-part and half wigs — no lace at all. Your own hair is left out to blend, so the parting is genuinely your scalp.
Frontals give the most freedom and take the most practice. Closures are quicker, more forgiving, and often wearable glueless with straps and combs.
Care
A human hair wig has no scalp feeding it oil, so the ends dry out faster than your own hair would. Looking after it is the difference between a wig that lasts a season and one that lasts years.
- Detangle from the ends upward, never from the roots down. On textured hair, do it wet with conditioner in — dry brushing pulls the wave or curl pattern out permanently.
- Wash sparingly with a sulphate-free shampoo, in sections rather than piling it up.
- Condition through the mid-lengths and ends rather than the roots, and use a weekly mask.
- Air dry on a stand. Allow plenty of time at higher densities — a dense wig put away damp is how wigs develop a smell.
- Heat protectant every time, at moderate temperatures. Repeated high heat wears a wig out faster than anything else.
- Refresh between wears with water and a little conditioner in a spray bottle rather than rewashing.
- Handle lace gently at the hairline, and store on a stand so the shape holds.
On coloured hair: reds and blondes fade fastest. Wash in cool water, and use a purple toning shampoo every few washes on blonde and highlighted pieces.
