Batana oil comes from the nut of the American palm, pressed and roasted, and it's been used for generations by the Miskito people of Honduras — who are known for their hair, and who call it their beauty oil.
It's thick, dark and unmistakably itself. If you've only used light, clear hair oils, this is a different thing entirely.
What it's actually like
Two things surprise people, so it's worth saying plainly.
It's very thick. Closer to a soft butter than a runny oil, particularly in a cold room. Warm it between your palms before applying and it spreads easily.
It smells strong. Deep, smoky and nutty, from the roasting. Some people love it, some find it takes getting used to, and it does fade after a wash. It isn't a perfumed product and doesn't pretend to be.
Both of those are signs it hasn't been heavily processed — the pale, odourless versions have usually had the character refined out of them.
What it's for
Sealing and conditioning. Its weight is the point: thin oils absorb and evaporate, while batana coats the strand and stays there, holding moisture in. That makes it particularly suited to coarse, coily, dry or heat-damaged hair, and to the ends of long hair where the scalp's own oil never reaches.
- As a scalp treatment. Part hair in sections, warm a small amount between your palms, massage into the scalp for a few minutes. Leave 30 minutes or overnight, then shampoo out.
- As a sealing step. On damp hair after a leave-in, smooth through the mid-lengths and ends. Oil goes on after moisture, never instead of it.
- On the ends only. A very small amount on dry ends between washes.
Start with far less than you think. It's heavy, and too much is difficult to wash out.
Use it on your wigs too
Human hair wigs get no oil from a scalp, so their ends dry out faster than anything on your own head. A small amount worked through the mid-lengths and ends of a wig on its stand keeps it soft and stops the ends going rough. Use it sparingly here — a wig can't be re-oiled by your body, but it also can't be washed as often. Keep it off the lace and the wefts.
Why it's worth buying
- It's the heaviest sealing oil you can buy. If lighter oils haven't held moisture in your hair, this will.
- Unrefined and honest. The thickness and the scent are what an unprocessed oil actually looks and smells like.
- A little goes a very long way. Even the single bottle lasts months at the amounts you'll use.
- Four options. One bottle to try, two or three to stock up, or the three-pack with a gift.
- Works for everyone. Every hair type and texture, and it's used by men and women alike — particularly on beards, where the weight suits coarse hair well.
Using it safely
Patch test on your inner forearm and wait 24 hours before the first full application, especially if you have a nut allergy — this is a nut-derived oil. Keep it away from the eyes and don't take it internally. If your scalp is broken or inflamed, or you're experiencing sudden or patchy hair loss, see a GP or trichologist rather than reaching for an oil.

Length and shrinkage guide
All our lengths are measured stretched. Textured hair sits shorter than its stated measurement once it is dry:
- Straight — almost no shrinkage. What you order is what you see.
- Body wave — an inch or two shorter.
- Deep wave and water wave — roughly a fifth to a quarter shorter.
- Curly and kinky curly — up to half. A 20 inch curly piece can sit at 10 inches once dry.
If you are between two lengths, take the longer one. Length disappointment is the commonest reason wigs get sent back, and sizing up costs nothing.
Wigs also arrive compressed from packaging and look thinner and shorter than expected. Shake it out and let it hang before judging it.
Choosing your cap
The cap decides how convincing the wig looks and how much skill it takes to put on. Neither end of this list is better — they suit different people.
- 4x4 closure — the simplest to install and the hardest to get wrong. One parting position. The sensible first wig.
- 4x6, 4x7 and 5x5 closure — a wider lace area, so you can move your parting without exposing the cap.
- 13x4 frontal — ear to ear coverage with real parting space. Middle part, deep side sweep, or moved between wears.
- 13x5 and 13x6 frontal — five or six inches of depth, so a deep middle part stays convincing all the way back.
- 360 frontal — lace around the whole perimeter. The only option if you want high ponytails and updos.
- V-part and half wigs — no lace at all. Your own hair is left out to blend, so the parting is genuinely your scalp.
Frontals give the most freedom and take the most practice. Closures are quicker, more forgiving, and often wearable glueless with straps and combs.
Care
A human hair wig has no scalp feeding it oil, so the ends dry out faster than your own hair would. Looking after it is the difference between a wig that lasts a season and one that lasts years.
- Detangle from the ends upward, never from the roots down. On textured hair, do it wet with conditioner in — dry brushing pulls the wave or curl pattern out permanently.
- Wash sparingly with a sulphate-free shampoo, in sections rather than piling it up.
- Condition through the mid-lengths and ends rather than the roots, and use a weekly mask.
- Air dry on a stand. Allow plenty of time at higher densities — a dense wig put away damp is how wigs develop a smell.
- Heat protectant every time, at moderate temperatures. Repeated high heat wears a wig out faster than anything else.
- Refresh between wears with water and a little conditioner in a spray bottle rather than rewashing.
- Handle lace gently at the hairline, and store on a stand so the shape holds.
On coloured hair: reds and blondes fade fastest. Wash in cool water, and use a purple toning shampoo every few washes on blonde and highlighted pieces.
