If you've never worn a wig, start here. A 4x4 closure is the simplest lace wig to install and the hardest to get wrong — and this one runs from a chin-length bob to shoulder length in natural colour, which is the most forgiving combination there is.
Why a 4x4 is the easy one
Four inches of lace across the top gives you a convincing parting without the ear-to-ear lace of a frontal. That means far less to lay, far less to trim, and far less that can go visibly wrong at the temples — which is where most first attempts come unstuck.
Frontals give more parting freedom, but they ask for skill you build over several wigs. A closure asks for almost none. You pick a parting position, and it stays there.
The honest trade-off: pushing hair back off the face will show the cap edge, so this suits being worn down or half-up. If you part in the middle and wear your hair loose — which is how most people wear it most days — you'll never notice the limitation.
Natural colour
The most versatile base there is. It goes with everything, needs no toning or upkeep, and doesn't fade the way reds and blondes do. It's also the starting point for anything you want to do later, since natural colour takes dye going darker without difficulty.
Six lengths, 10 to 20 inches
10" and 12" sit at the chin for a bob. 14" and 16" reach the jaw and collarbone. 18" and 20" fall at the shoulder and just past.
Everything about this range is easier to live with. Light on the cap, so no pulling across a long day. Barely any tangling at the nape, which is where wigs actually wear out. Quick to wash and dry. And longer-lasting as a result.

Care
Wash with a sulphate-free shampoo, condition through the mid-lengths and ends rather than the roots, and air dry on a stand. Detangle from the ends upward with a wide-tooth comb, never from the roots down. Use a heat protectant and keep temperatures moderate.
A weekly deep-conditioning mask makes a real difference to how long it lasts — a wig has no scalp feeding it oil, so the ends dry out faster than your own hair would. Handle the lace gently at the parting, and store it on a stand so the shape holds.

Length and shrinkage guide
All our lengths are measured stretched. Textured hair sits shorter than its stated measurement once it is dry:
- Straight — almost no shrinkage. What you order is what you see.
- Body wave — an inch or two shorter.
- Deep wave and water wave — roughly a fifth to a quarter shorter.
- Curly and kinky curly — up to half. A 20 inch curly piece can sit at 10 inches once dry.
If you are between two lengths, take the longer one. Length disappointment is the commonest reason wigs get sent back, and sizing up costs nothing.

Choosing your cap
The cap decides how convincing the wig looks and how much skill it takes to put on. Neither end of this list is better — they suit different people.
- 4x4 closure — the simplest to install and the hardest to get wrong. One parting position. The sensible first wig.
- 4x6, 4x7 and 5x5 closure — a wider lace area, so you can move your parting without exposing the cap.
- 13x4 frontal — ear to ear coverage with real parting space. Middle part, deep side sweep, or moved between wears.
- 13x5 and 13x6 frontal — five or six inches of depth, so a deep middle part stays convincing all the way back.
- 360 frontal — lace around the whole perimeter. The only option if you want high ponytails and updos.
- V-part and half wigs — no lace at all. Your own hair is left out to blend, so the parting is genuinely your scalp.
Frontals give the most freedom and take the most practice. Closures are quicker, more forgiving, and often wearable glueless with straps and combs.
Care
A human hair wig has no scalp feeding it oil, so the ends dry out faster than your own hair would. Looking after it is the difference between a wig that lasts a season and one that lasts years.
- Detangle from the ends upward, never from the roots down. On textured hair, do it wet with conditioner in — dry brushing pulls the wave or curl pattern out permanently.
- Wash sparingly with a sulphate-free shampoo, in sections rather than piling it up.
- Condition through the mid-lengths and ends rather than the roots, and use a weekly mask.
- Air dry on a stand. Allow plenty of time at higher densities — a dense wig put away damp is how wigs develop a smell.
- Heat protectant every time, at moderate temperatures. Repeated high heat wears a wig out faster than anything else.
- Refresh between wears with water and a little conditioner in a spray bottle rather than rewashing.
- Handle lace gently at the hairline, and store on a stand so the shape holds.
On coloured hair: reds and blondes fade fastest. Wash in cool water, and use a purple toning shampoo every few washes on blonde and highlighted pieces.
