Curls need moisture and they need something to hold their shape. Most products do one or the other — a gel that defines but leaves hair crunchy and dry, or a cream that softens but lets the curl collapse by lunchtime.
This is a curl cream built around black castor oil: rich enough to soften and smooth, light enough to let curls clump and hold rather than weighing them into strings.
Why black castor oil
Black castor oil is thicker and heavier than most hair oils, which is exactly why it suits textured hair. Coils and curls are naturally drier than straight hair — the scalp's own oils travel slowly down a bend and often never reach the ends. A heavier oil coats the strand and stays there, sealing moisture in rather than evaporating off within the hour.
It's been a staple of textured hair care for generations for that reason. It also gives the cream slip, which is what lets you work it through without pulling.
How to use it
- Start with damp hair, not soaking. Water is what you're sealing in, so the cream needs something to hold onto.
- Work through in sections, raking with your fingers so it coats every strand.
- Scrunch upward to encourage the curl to clump and form.
- Air dry, or diffuse on low. Don't touch it while it's drying — that's what causes frizz.
Start with less than you think. Textured hair takes more product than straight hair, but a curl cream is easier to add to than to take out. On drier or coarser hair, layer it over a leave-in conditioner.
It works on your wigs too
Curly and deep wave wigs need this more than natural hair does. A wig has no scalp feeding it oil, so nothing replenishes it between washes — which is why curly wigs go dry, frizzy and undefined faster than anything else you'll own.
Damp the wig on a stand, work the cream through in sections from the ends upward, scrunch, and leave it to dry. It brings a flattened curl pattern back and keeps the ends from going straw-like. Between wears, a light refresh does the same job without a full wash.

Length and shrinkage guide
All our lengths are measured stretched. Textured hair sits shorter than its stated measurement once it is dry:
- Straight — almost no shrinkage. What you order is what you see.
- Body wave — an inch or two shorter.
- Deep wave and water wave — roughly a fifth to a quarter shorter.
- Curly and kinky curly — up to half. A 20 inch curly piece can sit at 10 inches once dry.
If you are between two lengths, take the longer one. Length disappointment is the commonest reason wigs get sent back, and sizing up costs nothing.
Wigs also arrive compressed from packaging and look thinner and shorter than expected. Shake it out and let it hang before judging it.
Choosing your cap
The cap decides how convincing the wig looks and how much skill it takes to put on. Neither end of this list is better — they suit different people.
- 4x4 closure — the simplest to install and the hardest to get wrong. One parting position. The sensible first wig.
- 4x6, 4x7 and 5x5 closure — a wider lace area, so you can move your parting without exposing the cap.
- 13x4 frontal — ear to ear coverage with real parting space. Middle part, deep side sweep, or moved between wears.
- 13x5 and 13x6 frontal — five or six inches of depth, so a deep middle part stays convincing all the way back.
- 360 frontal — lace around the whole perimeter. The only option if you want high ponytails and updos.
- V-part and half wigs — no lace at all. Your own hair is left out to blend, so the parting is genuinely your scalp.
Frontals give the most freedom and take the most practice. Closures are quicker, more forgiving, and often wearable glueless with straps and combs.
Care
A human hair wig has no scalp feeding it oil, so the ends dry out faster than your own hair would. Looking after it is the difference between a wig that lasts a season and one that lasts years.
- Detangle from the ends upward, never from the roots down. On textured hair, do it wet with conditioner in — dry brushing pulls the wave or curl pattern out permanently.
- Wash sparingly with a sulphate-free shampoo, in sections rather than piling it up.
- Condition through the mid-lengths and ends rather than the roots, and use a weekly mask.
- Air dry on a stand. Allow plenty of time at higher densities — a dense wig put away damp is how wigs develop a smell.
- Heat protectant every time, at moderate temperatures. Repeated high heat wears a wig out faster than anything else.
- Refresh between wears with water and a little conditioner in a spray bottle rather than rewashing.
- Handle lace gently at the hairline, and store on a stand so the shape holds.
On coloured hair: reds and blondes fade fastest. Wash in cool water, and use a purple toning shampoo every few washes on blonde and highlighted pieces.
